    Quantitative relations between corruption and economic factors

    We report quantitative relations between corruption level and economic factors, such as country wealth and foreign investment per capita, which are characterized by a power law spanning multiple scales of wealth and investments per capita. These relations hold for diverse countries, and also remain stable over different time periods. We also observe a negative correlation between level of corruption and long-term economic growth. We find similar results for two independent indices of corruption, suggesting that the relation between corruption and wealth does not depend on the specific measure of corruption. The functional relations we report have implications when assessing the relative level of corruption for two countries with comparable wealth, and for quantifying the impact of corruption on economic growth and foreign investments.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

    Achieving Practical and Accurate Indoor Navigation for People with Visual Impairments

    Methods that provide accurate navigation assistance to people with visual impairments often rely on instrumenting the environment with specialized hardware infrastructure. In particular, approaches that use sensor networks of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons have been shown to achieve precise localization and accurate guidance while the structural modifications to the environment are kept at minimum. To install navigation infrastructure, however, a number of complex and time-critical activities must be performed. The BLE beacons need to be positioned correctly and samples of Bluetooth signal need to be collected across the whole environment. These tasks are performed by trained personnel and entail costs proportional to the size of the environment that needs to be instrumented. To reduce the instrumentation costs while maintaining a high accuracy, we improve over a traditional regression-based localization approach by introducing a novel, graph-based localization method using Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) and particle filter. We then study how the number and density of beacons and Bluetooth samples impact the balance between localization accuracy and set-up cost of the navigation environment.     Clinical and molecular implications of mosaicism in FMR1 full mutations

    Expansions of more than 200 CGG repeats (full mutation) in the FMR1 gene give rise to fragile X syndrome (FXS) through a process that generally involves hypermethylation of the FMR1 promoter region and gene silencing, resulting in absence of expression of the encoded protein, FMRP. However, mosaicism with alleles differing in size and extent of methylation often exist within or between tissues of individuals with FXS. In the current work, CGG-repeat lengths and methylation status were assessed for eighteen individuals with FXS, including 13 mosaics, for which peripheral blood cells (PBMCs) and primary fibroblast cells were available. Our results show that for both PBMCs and fibroblasts, FMR1 mRNA and FMRP expression are directly correlated with the percent of methylation of the FMR1 allele. In addition, Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores were inversely correlated with the percent methylation and positively correlated with higher FMRP expression. These latter results point toward a positive impact on cognition for full mutation, methylation mosaics with lower methylation compared to individuals with fully methylated, full mutation alleles. However, we did not observe a significant reduction in the number of seizures, nor in the severity of hyperactivity or autism spectrum disorder, among individuals with mosaic genotypes in the presentation of FXS.These observations suggest that low, but non-zero expression of FMRP may be sufficient to positively impact cognitive function in individuals with FXS, with methylation mosaicism (lowered methylation fraction) contributing to a more positive clinical outcome

    Impedance Analysis of Complex Formation Equilibria in Phosphatidylcholine Bilayers Containing Decanoic Acid or Decylamine

    Bilayer lipid membranes composed of phosphatidylcholine and decanoic acid or phosphatidylcholine and decylamine were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Interaction between membrane components causes significant deviations from the additivity rule. Area, capacitance, and stability constant values for the complexes were calculated based on the model assuming 1:1 stoichiometry, and the model was validated by comparison of these values to experimental results. We established that phosphatidylcholine and decylamine form highly stable 1:1 complexes. In the case of decanoic acid-modified phosphatidylcholine membranes, complexes with stoichiometries other than 1:1 should be taken into consideration

    Impact of switching oral bisphosphonates to denosumab or daily teriparatide on the progression of radiographic joint destruction in patients with biologic-naïve rheumatoid arthritis

    Summary: In biologic-naïve female RA patients, switching oral BPs to DMAb significantly reduced radiographic joint destruction compared to continuing oral BPs or switching to TPTD at 12 months, which were significantly associated with a decrease of a bone resorption marker at 6 months. Introduction: The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of switching oral bisphosphonates (BPs) to denosumab (DMAb) or daily teriparatide (TPTD) on the progression of radiographic joint destruction in patients with biologic-naïve rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: A retrospective, case-controlled study involving 90 female RA patients (mean age 68.2 years, 96.7% postmenopausal, disease activity score assessing 28 joints with CRP (DAS28-CRP) 2.4, methotrexate treatment 81.1%, prednisolone treatment 68.9%, and prior BP treatment 44.8 months), who were allocated depending on each patient’s and physician’s wishes, to (1) the BP-continue group (n = 30), (2) the switch-to-DMAb group (n = 30), or (3) the switch-to-TPTD group (n = 30), was conducted. Patients were retrospectively selected to minimize the difference of possible clinical backgrounds that may affect the joint destruction of RA. The primary endpoint was to clarify the change of the modified total Sharp score (mTSS) from baseline to 12 months. Results: After 12 months, the mean changes of the modified Sharp erosion score were significantly lower in the switch-to-DMAb group (0.2 ± 0.1; mean ± standard error) than in the switch-to-TPTD group (1.3 ± 0.5; P < 0.05), and mTSS was significantly lower in the switch-to-DMAb group (0.3 ± 0.2) than in the BP-continue group (1.0 ± 0.3; P < 0.05) and the switch-to-TPTD group (1.7 ± 0.6; P < 0.05). The logistic regression analysis showed that mTSS changes were significantly associated with the percent changes of TRACP-5b at 6 months (β = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.002–0.016; P < 0.01).     The liver X receptor pathway is highly upregulated in rheumatoid arthritis synovial macrophages and potentiates TLR-driven cytokine release

    &lt;p&gt;Objectives: Macrophages are central to the inflammatory processes driving rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovitis. The molecular pathways that are induced in synovial macrophages and thereby promote RA disease pathology remain poorly understood.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Methods: We used microarray to characterise the transcriptome of synovial fluid (SF) macrophages compared with matched peripheral blood monocytes from patients with RA (n=8).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results: Using in silico pathway mapping, we found that pathways downstream of the cholesterol activated liver X receptors (LXRs) and those associated with Toll-like receptor (TLR) signalling were upregulated in SF macrophages. Macrophage differentiation and tumour necrosis factor α promoted the expression of LXRα. Furthermore, in functional studies we demonstrated that activation of LXRs significantly augmented TLR-driven cytokine and chemokine secretion.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Conclusions: The LXR pathway is the most upregulated pathway in RA synovial macrophages and activation of LXRs by ligands present within SF augments TLR-driven cytokine secretion. Since the natural agonists of LXRs arise from cholesterol metabolism, this provides a novel mechanism that can promote RA synovitis.&lt;/p&gt

    Structure and microstructure evolution of Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by equal-channel angular pressing

    An ultrafine grained Al–Mg–Si alloy was prepared by severe plastic deformation using the equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) method. Samples were ECAPed through a die with an inner angle of F = 90° and outer arc of curvature of ¿ = 37° from 1 to 12 ECAP passes at room temperature following route Bc. To analyze the evolution of the microstructure at increasing ECAP passes, X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction analyses were carried out. The results revealed two distinct processing regimes, namely (i) from 1 to 5 passes, the microstructure evolved from elongated grains and sub-grains to a rather equiaxed array of ultrafine grains and (ii) from 5 to 12 passes where no change in the morphology and average grain size was noticed. In the overall behavior, the boundary misorientation angle and the fraction of high-angle boundaries increase rapidly up to 5 passes and at a lower rate from 5 to 12 passes. The crystallite size decreased down to about 45 nm with the increase in deformation. The influence of deformation on precipitate evolution in the Al–Mg–Si alloy was also studied by differential scanning calorimetry. A significant decrease in the peak temperature associated to the 50% of recrystallization was observed at increasing ECAP passes.Peer ReviewedPreprin
